Update – Club Activities

Firstly Pitch News

We are pleased to announce that the new Grandstand was successfully delivered & installed on Friday 24 July. What a fantastic addition to our facilities!

it is looking in stunning condition! The lads are going to have a top notch pitch to play on when we get going again.

Much work has again been done this month by our merry band of volunteers: Andy B & Tacker have continued their hard work on the pitch; painting of the new fence between the Old Grandstand & the Standing Stand, to the pitch-side hand railings & to other fences (big thanks to John H, Dan H & Duffy); modifications to the pitch-side fence/netting to enable the grandstand delivery wagon to get into the ground (thanks to Graham M & Dumper); extensive redecorating to the inside of the club house (many thanks to Mitch, Simon D & Martin Jee); pressure washing to more external hard surfaces (thanks to Rob Buxton of Pressure Washers SW) and tireless weeding around the pitch & drive (thanks Richard B).

Looking Forward

With the relaxation of lockdown restrictions recently announced by Central Government we have been working extremely hard in the past few weeks with risk assessments, signage & the development of operating procedures so that we can safely welcome you back into the Club bar. To that end, we will be fully re-opening the club bar this Saturday, 1 August, at 2.00pm: everyone is welcome so try and support us if you can. There will be restrictions in place as defined in the Government guidelines: these include a one-way system through the club house, no standing at the bar and only seated consumption of alcohol inside.

Bingo

Bingo is likely to re-start in early-September: keep an eye on the website & social media for the exact date.

Football Training

At last football training has started for the team and the FA & Southern Football League have announced that the new league season will start on 19 September 2020. Before this we are likely to be in FA Cup action either on Wednesday 2 September or Saturday 12 September depending on the draw.

Russell has really excelled in the quality of friendlies he has arranged for pre-season. His list of matches is:

  • Sat 1 Aug: Away V Axminster Town (3pm)
  • Sat 8 Aug: Away v Oldland Abbotonians (3pm)
  • Sat 15 Aug: Home V Westbury Utd (3pm)
  • Tues 18 Aug: Home v Plymouth Parkway (7.30pm)
  • Fri 21 Aug: Home v Bridgwater Town (7.30pm)
  • Fri 28 Aug: Home v Taunton Town (7.30pm)
  • Sat 5 Sept: Home v Truro City (3pm)

Finally, a mention for all our corporate sponsors. Without their backing the Club would not have progressed to the level at which we now are. We at WRFC are acutely aware that all businesses have had an extremely hard time over the past three months so I would urge everyone of you to support our sponsors by buying their goods and services whenever possible.

Our current sponsors can be found on our website on the “Sponsors” page: Please support our sponsors if you can, as your support of them will enable them to continue their support of WRFC.

Many thanks for your continuing help & support. Stay safe and well, and we hope to see you on Saturday afternoon.

Willand Rovers Grandstand Project

GRANDSTAND JUNE UPDATE

As we are now well into June I thought I’d give you an update as to what’s been going on at the club.

The groundworks for the new Grandstand base are now complete (see attached photo). The grandstand structure is in production and we have been given a provisional delivery/installation date of Friday 24 July. Exciting times!

The electrics throughout the club have been upgraded to ensure the cable & breaker board infrastructure is adequate to take the ever increasing load we put on the system as we develop our facilities.

The pitch is looking in stunning condition! Mowtec have recently fertilised & re-seeded, Andy Barnard and Tacker (big thanks to them) have been lovingly watering, cutting & filling low spots on the playing surface. When we get back to serious football the lads are going to have cracking pitch to ply their trade on!

On top of this there has been a lot of other work being done by the volunteer Friday & Saturday gangs (whilst maintaining social distancing of course): this includes cutting of hedges behind the stands & to the side of the club house (big thanks to Chris Dean & Duffy), new fencing between the standing-stand & the existing seated stand, modifications to the pitch-side rails, repairs to the ball-stop netting, new security door to the skittle alley, new player entrance door to the changing rooms, refurbishment to the front gate to keep the memory of Eric Potter very much alive (thanks to John Hooper for his artistic skills), the changing rooms have also been treated to a “deep clean” (many thanks to Martin Jee) so they are ready for when we start the new season and the internal floors & carpets and many external hard surfaces have received a deep clean by Rob Buxton of Pressure Washers SW.

There is still a long list of jobs that we have to do; these will be started soon and progressed in the coming weeks.

It looks like there is light at the end of the tunnel with regard to relaxation of lockdown restrictions, so hopefully we will soon be able to welcome you all back into the club. We await advice from Central Government as to exactly when that might be.

Finally, a mention for all our corporate sponsors. Without their backing the Club would not have progressed to the level at which we now are. We at WRFC are acutely aware that all businesses have had an extremely hard time over the past three months so I would urge everyone of you, our members, to support our sponsors by buying their goods and services whenever possible.

Our current sponsors can be found on our website on the “Sponsors” page: Please support our sponsors if you can, as your support of them will enable them to continue their support of WRFC.

Many thanks for your continuing help & support.

Stay safe and well, and we hope to welcome you all back into the Club soon.

With the current “lockdown” in place, we are in a situation where all our revenue streams have been cut and our income is nil. This looks set to continue for some time!

It is therefore with some reluctance that we are appealing to the generosity of our members, supporters, followers and even the wider Willand and general football families to assist us in meeting the funding shortfall for our grandstand project.

11/06/20 GRANDSTAND UPDATE

Works for our new grandstand are progressing well. The concrete base slab has been cast and the actual grandstand structure is now being fabricated. We expect the new stand to be erected at Silver Street at the end of July. Thank you to everyone that has supported us and for all the kind words of support we have received.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back to the club in the near future to celebrate the opening of our new stand.

News – Grant

Willand Rovers are pleased to announce they have been awarded a £1500 Pitch Preparation Fund grant from the Premier League, The FA and the Government’s Football Foundation: Our sincere thanks to these organisations. This will mean that in these financially challenging times we will still be able to fully prepare our pitch for the forthcoming season, whenever that may start.

Thank You

Amazingly after just three days we have almost reached 70% of our target.

The Management Team at WRFC are truly humbled by the generosity of our members & friends and the kind messages of support & good wishes we have received.

A very big THANK YOU to everyone that has donated to our new grandstand during these difficult times.

We are looking forward to the time – hopefully soon – when we can welcome you back into the Club to thank you all personally.

Many thanks
