Evesham United v Willand Rovers

Willand’s latest away day sees us make the Journey up the M5 towards Worcestershire where playoff-pushing Evesham United are our latest test in the Southern League Premier Division One South this Saturday.

Midweek it was back to Silver Street for David Steele’s men where goal-scoring for fun Bristol Manor Farm were the visitors on a mild Wednesday evening but the game was nothing short of fiery as Rovers went 2 up thanks to Owen Howe’s first-half contributions and an awarded penalty where he struck it, rippling the net in the process.

But Lee Lashenko’s men did not want to leave Mid-Devon without anything on the board which is when they turned up the heat with Tate finding the bottom right to claw one back in stoppage time it was a scramble to get it in but Tate again tapped it home to secure a point for the Farmy Army

David Steele spoke to the press afterwards and stated that “it was an eventful game and that it was lively throughout” with moving into the Evesham game as a priority for points on the board.

Onto the game at hand, Evesham United have been on a different line of form than usual at the start of the season as they’ve propelled themselves fast into the playoff spots, looking to turn around their several seasons of missing out on promotion and making this campaign theirs.

Former Cardiff City and Oxford United defender Mike Ford is at the helm at The Spiers & Hartwell Stadium where he has guided them to some big results already this season with them turning over favourites Manor Farm and certainly racking up the clean sheets so breaking down the Evesham Backline will be a priority.

One to watch for the hosts shares a name with the gaffer and it’s Levi Steele who has already got 5 goals to his name this 24/25 campaign for Evesham. A fan favourite for the Robins he is known for his creativity and scoring ability and turning a game on its head in the biggest moments.

The last time both sides met was when Evesham also hosted and right at the end of the 23/24 campaign in which the Robins ran out victors in a 3-2 goal fest on a warm April weekend.

Can Willand finally get the golden +3 on the road this weekend or will it be the hosts who continue to build on their promotion push? It’s all to play for this Saturday in Evesham.

Willand Rovers v Bristol Manor Farm

The fixtures continue to come thick and fast for Willand as this Wednesday we are back at Silver Street for the visit of promotion pushing Bristol Manor Farm in a 7:30KO in the Southern League Premier Division One South.

Last time round for Rovers it was a trip to Wiltshire where Bemerton Heath Harlequins secured the three points on an autumnal afternoon where the hosts took the lead early on with a driven shot into the bottom right after several missed chances. In the second half, Willand would find an equaliser as Harvey Dorothy made a sprint for it to walk it past the host’s keeper and make it 1-1. However, the fun stopped quickly with a free kick awarded to the hosts and that being drilled from 25 yards out past Burton to secure three points to Bemerton.

Steele spoke to the media afterwards to give his rundown of the 90 minutes and stated that “in those key moments we needed to be strong and solid and not sloppy” signalling a bounce back for Wednesday’s game when we take on Bristol Manor Farm.

Our opponents on Wednesday have had a great start to the season with them scoring in abundance and already this season their average goals rack up to 3+ so it’s one thing their strong with this season it is an attacking threat.

The Farmy Army’s recent game was a 3-2 thriller at Melksham Town where the visitors secured a late winner to seal all three from another promotion chaser in the league with Louis Britton with that winning goal.

Manor Farm also have a former Rover on their books in Olly Sully who joined us in Late August on loan from Southern Premier side Taunton Town in which he turned out for us several times in that period where he continued his development in his career.

It’s vice versa as Captain Owen Howe has also turned out for Wednesday’s opponent a few seasons ago and cemented himself as a fan favourite with the Farmy Army in his time at The Creek.

Willand has had a lot of luck on Wednesday Nights at Silver Street so far this season, both Mousehole and Larkhall have suffered defeats as a result of that fixture slot so can Rovers make it 3 for 3 with the visit of high-flying Manor Farm?

Match Report Bemerton Heath Vs WRFC

Willand travelled to Wiltshire for Saturday’s matchup vs Bemerton Heath in our latest battle in the Southern League Premier Division One South Campaign as we try to put things right by breaking our streak as Rovers are yet to seal all three on the road so far in 24/25.

In the early stages, there were huge shouts for what seemed to be a penalty but the referee saw it as a dive and didn’t give it as Owen got booked for asking for it. A cross comes in from the right-hand side as a free kick and Harvey Dorothy gets his head on it but his connection isn’t great so the opportunity comes to nothing.

Willand countered quickly as George Burton launched a clearance up to Owen Howe who was able to get the ball under control with a shoulder-to-shoulder battle and a few passes in the box let the hosts reset. Soon after Fin Rooke goes down in the box for a penalty as Owen Howe takes the penalty the keeper saves it onto the post.

Shortly after it would be the hosts who took the lead as a quick turnaround from Bemerton as a shot from one of their front men hit the crossbar when the rebound shot was blocked but our luck ran out with shots going adrift as another rebound was slotted away into the bottom right-hand corner.

Debutant Jacob Wellington’s shot from outside the box was travelling towards the bottom right but the keeper got down well and could tip it past the post, from that the corners came to very little.

It could’ve been 2-0 before the whistle as Ross Edwards was turned and sat down and as the shot went off it was sent miles high above the crossbar as George Burton was unphased about it.

Going into the break, Bemerton were ahead and Rovers really should have gotten something out of that half but a very important 45 was up for David Steele’s men.

Our fortunes would change though as Dorothy gets past his man well with a lovely change of direction and he plays a perfectly weighted ball to Harvey Dorothy who takes a touch to go around the keeper and walks his way to another goal to his tally this season.

Ross took down Leighton Thomas as he was bodied to the ground and was given a yellow card for the challenge. The free kick was given to the hosts and a very well-taken strike from Olly Balmer with it rifling towards the near post and it’s too powerful for George Burton to palm away as he palms it into his net to put the hosts ahead again.

One of the Bemerton midfielders takes an ambitious long shot which is parried and claimed quite easily by George Burton. Rovers continue to find a leveller with Jack Kennell crossing into the path of Fin Rooke as his header hits the post with Phil Mendonca following it up by sending it just over the bar.

On a day of many free kicks, another Bemerton player goes down and the ball is deflected for the corner. As that comes to an end Rovers goes in the attack and has a few shots and they get felt with and the ball eventually goes out for a corner.

In the dying stages of the game, Bemerton’s number 9 Leighton Thomas was shown a red card from a second yellow of the game for a high foot which connects with Ross Edward’s head. The hosts reduced to 10 in extra time.

Full-time at Moon Park and it ends in a 2-1 win for Bemerton Heath on another tough afternoon for Willand on the road in a month where we have several away trips lined up.

Match Preview Bemerton Heath Vs WRFC

This Saturday and our latest test see us travel to Salisbury to take on Bemerton Heath Harlequins for the reverse fixture in the Southern League Division One South with a 3 pm KO at Moon Park.

Earlier this week, Rovers were due to play Exmouth Town in a Devon Derby but the rain kept on coming down on Tuesday and Wednesday which ultimately got it called off and moved to a later date so this fixture is the sole focus of David Steele’s men.

The last game for Willand was a 1-1 draw with Malvern Town who managed to secure a late point with their on-loan striker Olateju clawing back Harvey Dorothy’s goal midway in the second half.

Moving onto this week’s opponents, Harlequins sit in 15th in the division on 9 points after playing 9 where they have struggled for the full 3 points with most of their results consisting of draws on the road or at home. Manager James Milligan is in charge of the Salisbury outfit and is looking to try and get the second club in the city up to the same standards as their counterparts just 6 miles east of Moon Park.

A new face for the visitors is Olly Balmer who comes in from Winchester City where he helped The Citizens up top last season in the seventh tier and brings a wealth of experience from his days playing across the south-east and goals are certainly something which our hosts have lacked this season so far so it could be the boost they’ve been looking for.

As previously mentioned, we have already played Bemerton Heath this season at Silver Street on the opening day of the season where a 2-2 draw was the final scoreline with Jamie Richards and Harvey Dorothy scoring for Rovers on the afternoon.

The away days keep coming for Willand but the Southern League continues to test us in different ways. Will it be three points on the road this weekend at a mid-table Bemerton, you can find out tomorrow.

Match Report WRFC Vs Malvern Town

Willand vs. Malvern

From Raggedstone Hill, you can look over the market town of Ledbury and, on clear days, onwards towards Hereford and the Welsh border towns.

According to Charles F. Grindrod’s 19th-century book The Shadow of the Ragged Stone Hill, the area was cursed by a monk named St. Cedd., the legend perpetuating that as punishment for masquerading as a knight to avenge the death of his mother, among other misdemeanours unbecoming of a monk, he was sentenced to crawl up to Ragged Stone Hill daily until his death.

Embittered by what he saw as an unjust punishment, he set a curse upon Ragged Stone Hill before his death, ensuring that anyone caught in its shadow would face misfortune and experience a spiral into tragedy or hardship.

Over the centuries, this legend has fueled countless tales of misfortune befalling those who ventured too close to the hill or dared to look upon its crest. The curse has become a part of local lore, with some claiming that the shadow of Raggedstone still lingers over the surrounding lands, casting its malevolent influence on unsuspecting visitors to the Malvern Hills range, running approximately along the Herefordshire-Worcestershire border, and one might wonder if Lee Hooper and Stephen Cleal, the Malvern Towns management team, unknowingly conducted preseason training in the shadows of Raggedstone Hill.

I’m using creative enlightenment, of course, but today’s visitors arrive at Silver Street on a run of form that could embolden the legend, having managed only one league win to date and finding themselves deep in the relegation mire, albeit still early in the season.

Of course, mythology and football often share clear parallels, with ancient tales offering narratives that resonate with the experiences of clubs and their fans. For instance, Manchester City’s transformation from a struggling side to a powerhouse mirrors the rise of the Phoenix, symbolising rebirth and resilience after overcoming years of difficulties, both on and off the pitch (although with the impending financial fair play case hanging over them, I may have to redress this article in the direction of Icarus, who perished after flying too close to the Sun!).

Liverpool’s journey evokes Odysseus from ‘The Odyssey’, as the club has faced numerous trials before ascending to the peak of Mount Olympus, notably their dramatic Champions League comeback in 2005 and eventual Premiership win in 2020, while across the city Everton’s struggles to achieve consistent success in the Premier League mirror Sisyphus’ endless task of rolling the boulder uphill.

And let’s not forget our friends from the potteries, whose constant proclamation of being a ‘big club’ reflects Tantalus, forever tantalised by success that is always out of reach.

David Steele made several changes from the defeat at Thatcham, with Dorothy, Camilo, and Richards replacing Rook, Hewett, and Whitfield in the starting 11, with the Willand manager also welcoming new signing Phil Mendica to the bench.

The home side came close to an early breakthrough in the 4th minute when Dorothy broke free from his defender and forced a smart save from Kovacevic, and moments later the Willand striker had another chance, walking the ball around the keeper before missing his shot from a tight angle.

Willand continued on the front foot, pressing the Malvern defence, who struggled to get any rhythm into their game, but despite continuing to pile on the pressure, the home side struggled to find the decisive pass or direct shot.

Howe finally created another opportunity in the 34th minute with a smart turn in the box, but his shot was again saved by Kovacevic.

Malvern’s first shot came in the 36th minute, though it failed to trouble Burton in the Willand goal, and just before halftime, Willand came close again when Guppy’s smart header from an Allen corner was cleared off the line by a flying defender..

Half-Time: Willand 1 – Malvern 0

Willand started the second half as they finished the first, harrying and harassing the Hllsiders but again without creating any chances of note, while the visitors defended well without troubling the Willand backline.

The breakthrough finally came in the 64th minute when Dorothy latched onto a long ball and chipped the onrushing Malvern keeper to give Willand a deserved lead and Willand nearly doubled their advantage with a stinging free kick from Allen that the Malvern keeper could only parry, with no one in white on hand to capitalise on the loose ball, while Guppy again came close from a corner; his header flew just wide.

Against the run of play, Malvern equalised through Olateju in the 82nd minute with a well-worked move. The ball was played across the face of goal, and the Malvern debutant tapped it into an open net to bring the visitors level.

In the dying moments, Willand had one final chance to snatch the win, as Rook latched onto a loose ball in the Malvern penalty area, but once again, Kovacevic, now having a game of Herculean proportions, was on hand with an excellent save to ensure the points were shared.

I might argue that the final match paralleled the fight between Ares and Athena in Greek mythology. Ares, the god of battle, symbolised might and control, whereas Athena, the goddess of wisdom, symbolised fortitude and strategy. During the Trojan War, Ares frequently controlled the early exchanges with continuous pressure, putting Athena into a defensive position. However, it was Athena who cleverly exploited a moment of weakness, unleashing a sensational counterattack that reversed the tide—similar to Malvern’s late equaliser in the match.

For most of the partisan home supporters, the myth de jour was likely more relatable, resembling the tale of Dick Whittington, as they claimed to have witnessed daylight robbery.

Full-Time: Willand 1 – Malvern 1
