Photos > Willand Rovers 5-1 Cadbury Heath. League Game 1st November 2014
ROVERS (1) 5: 1 (0) CADBURY HEATH
There was no FA Cup hangover from Rovers as they put a good Cadbury Heath side to the sword at Silver Street, scoring four second half goals, and holding a nap hand lead until a 90th minute goal for the visitors in this Toolstation League Premier Division meeting.
The visitors made a bright start and, but for a superb goal line clearance by left back Dean Stamp they would have taken a 25th minute elad.
Tom Bath, a hat-trick scorer in the midweek 6-4 St Lukes Bowl win over Witheridge, opened the scoring a minute before the break, turning home a left wing cross from Dean Stamp.
After the break Bath was hauled down in the area and Stamp tucked the penalty away. Luke Durham, who started the game on the bench, was clearly quick to make his mark and, soon after his introduction, he made it 3-0 before a stunning 25-yard strike by Jamie Hatch – his first for the club – increased the lead further. James Blake got the fifth, but a lively Cadbury Heath fully deserved their last minute goal, a powerful strike from Matt Huxley.
Speaking of the Silver Street turnout of 72, football secretary Dominic Clark said: “It’s as bizarre as it is disappointing that 900 plus attend the FA Cup tie which we follow up with six goals in midweek and yet today we get ten less than the current average this season. It make you wonder what you have to do to get the support in!”
Star Man: James Blake (Willand Rovers)
The day’s only other Toolstation League top flight game saw Winterbourne United beat Street 5-3.
Rovers out of the FA Cup – post match comment.
Rovers assistant boss Hedley Steele summed up the post match mood at Silver Street on BBC Radio Devon, saying: “It’s disappointing, we have mixed emotions. Never liked losing football matches and there was a big prize on the end of today. We genuinely felt we could make the next step and be in the draw, but that’s football. It simply wasn’t to be.”
“Losing Scott to a warm-up injury was a big blow, he felt he pulled a calf-muscle. Scott being Scott I thought he was joking. Unfortunately he was deadly serious and the physio took a look and felt it was a no go. So, 25 minutes before the game we were having to knock on the referee’s door and Say sorry ref we need to change it. Losing a player of his quality was a huge blow, but we cannot use any excuses. We came up short against a class side despite our lads putting in a great deal of effort.”
On the red card – the second yellow, Steele said: “For me I felt it was a harsh second yellow, but hey-ho, it’s the referee’s call. What we did not do was slump the shoulders, we kept working hard for the entire 90 minutes. Yes, Gosport were in a comfort zone after the red card, but our lads gave it a go.”
On the overall say Steele said: “The cup run has been special and now its over we can only reflect on what we’ve done. It’s lifted the profile of the club and no doubt given everyone a lift. Let’s hope some come back. We now have to play catch-up’ in the Tool station league, but we have a great bunch of lads at the club and there’ll be no resting on laurels.”
Club secretary Dominic Clark said: “It was a magnificent day and hat’s off to all our good club folk who worked so hard to get that extra-ordinary 932 crowd into the ground. They (Gosport) are a class act, but we had our moments and it’s been a special day all round. Here’s hoping some of them return for Wednesday night’s St Lukes game with Witheridge or Saturday’s Toolstation League game with Cadbury Heath (3pm).”
Clark concluded: “Their number four Carter was head and shoulders the game’s top man, but for us I thought both Roger Ingram and James Blake were very good.”

The Rovers cup dream is over, but they gave a superb all-round display against a classy Gosport side that ply their trade three levels higher than Scott Rogers’ men.
There was a 100-metre line at 2.30pm of people lining up to get in to see the game and Silver Street was packed to the rafters for a very special occasion. Prior to kick-off there was an impeccable minute’s silence observed by the crowd – the silence out of respect for the Bow AAC player who had sadly passed away playing a Fresha League game against Thorverton, seven days before
The game was broadcast live on BBC Radio Devon with former Rovers assistant manager Neil ‘Nellie’ Greening as the guest expert summariser along side the BBC’s top commentator Richard Green who were perched in the Silver Street grandstand.
Rovers made an understandably nervous start and the first 15 minutes saw the Gosport front two of Justin Bennett and Matt Patterson make life very uncomfortable for the Rovers back line.
The first gilt-edged chance of the game came in the 23rd minute when Gosport striker Justin Bennett headed wide of an empty net with home keeper Kurtis Parkin flat- footed.
Just three minutes later Rovers’ lone striker James Blake was put through one-on-one, but rather than opt to go round the gloves man Blake hurried his shot and it was comfortably held by Nathan Ashmore, and the chance was gone.
Parkin made a superb save to deny a Rory Williams near post header from a 29th minute corner, but there was nothing he could do about a 34th minute shot from Mike Carter.
The lead was doubled five minutes before the break when a clever ball by Carter released Patterson and he applied a clinical finish.
Two minutes after falling further behind Luke Durham fired a shot that went just wide of the upright.
Early in the second half Blake went close after a fine run and cross from Josh Wadham.
At the other end Parkin produced a good save in the 55th minute to deny Dan Woodan, the ball going for a corner. Another corner was quickly conceded and, from this Steve Ramsey tucked the ball home to make it 3-0.
A minute later Rovers pulled a goal back through Luke Alden after good work from Blake.
In the 60th minute Blake had a shot saved before, two minutes later Tom Bath replaced Josh Waddon as Rovers switched to a two-man strike force.
Rovers were reduced to ten men in 66th minute with Luke Durham shown a second yellow card.
Down to ten men Rovers boss Scott Rogers tweaked his side and the final 15-minutes saw no further goals with chances at a premium at either end, though Gosport missed a fine chance late on, but a fourth goal against Rovers would have been mighty harsh on their effort.
Brett Worbey replaced David Steele with 15 minutes remaining, but a confident Gosport side saw the game out in some comfort and it is the Hampshire side who will be in Monday’s draw for the 1st Round proper whilst a brave Rovers will return to ply their trade in the Toolstation League.
Rovers go under the spotlight this week with local TV companies and other forms of media descending on Silver Street as the build-up to the big FA Cup tie on Saturday continues. The meeting with GOSPORT BOROUGH (3pm) is going to be 27th FA Cup for Rovers. With the Hampshire visitors also having never reached the 1st Round proper it’s opportunity knocks for one of thee teams to make history. Rovers are of course the lowest ranked side left in the FA Cup this season. So what about that Rovers historical record in the FA Cup – well here it is:
Season 2002/03: Our first experience of the FA Cup and an early exit as we went out in the Extra preliminary Round, beaten 3-0 by Christchurch in a game played at Wimborne Town Football Club.
Season 2003/04: Another early exit as we went out at the first time of asking, beaten in the Preliminary Round 5-0 at Cornish side St Blazey.
Season 2004/05: A third year on the spin and an exit at the first time of asking as we staged the first ever Silver Street FA Cup tie, losing 4-1 to St Blazey.
Season 2005/06: A fourth successive early exit as we went out at the first time of asking beaten here 1-0 by Hamworthy of the Wessex League.
SEASON 2006/07: At last, and indeed, at the fifth time of asking Rovers won an FA Cup. That historic first ever win in the competition came at Chard Town in the preliminary Round played on September 2nd 2005 as we won 4-0. In the 1st Qualifying Round we then entertained Tavistock and beat them 4-0 before going out in the 2nd Qualifying Round, beaten 3-1 at Clevedon Town.
Season 2007/08: September 1st and a preliminary Round game saw us once again out at the first tie of asking and beaten, for the second time in three years in the FA Cup, by Hamworthy United. We were 2-0 down at half-time, then 3-0 down. James Ansell was sent off after getting a second yellow card but David Steele (75) and Danny Jee (85) then set up a grandstand finish but the visitors held on to win.
Season 2008/09: We began with an Extra Preliminary Round game here at home to Wadebridge that we won 6-0. Such was our dominance that, on a wet day, keeper Brian Cann’s cocks were percil white after 75 minutes! Danny Baily lobbed us ahead before the break and we went nap in the second half with Baily going on to bag a hat-trick, sub Luke Skinner scored a cracker and the other goals came from new signing Alexis Piper and a bullet header from Sam Croft. We went out in the next round though, beaten 2-1 at Poole Town where Danny Baily had out us ahead but, after the hosts leveled, Russell Jee was sent off for dissent and we went on to lose.
Season 2009/10: Prior to this season’s run this was our best run in the FA Cup to date and began with a an Extra Preliminary Round 2-2 draw at home to Street with our goals scored by Dean Stamp and David Steele, the latter netting in the final five minutes. The midweek replay at Street was settled by George Rogers in the final minute to seal a 1-0 win. We then faced Falmouth Town and, after drawing 1-1 in Cornwall thanks to a Dean Stamp penalty, we won the replay 2-1 thanks to goals from David Steele and another from Stamp. Next up a 1st Qualifying Round tie here against Poole Town that we won 1-0 thanks to a 2nd half penalty from Russell Jee. That’s where it ended though as we lost 5-0 at home to Bath City on September 26th in front of a big crowd.
Season 2010/11. The FA Cup run began on Saturday August 14 with a 2-0 home win over Western League new boys Merthyr Town who were beaten thanks to goals from Dean Stamp and Ben Mammola.
Season 2011/12. The cup run began, and ended, at the first time of asking as Rovers lost 1-0 at home to Barnstaple Town who scored an 88th minute winner.
Season 2012/13. For the second successive year the Rovers FA Cup run was over at the first time of asking as a trip to Larkhall Athletic ended in a 2-1 defeat though there was a first senior goal for 17-year-old striker Josh Luxon
SEASON 2013/14: For the third year running out at the first time of asking and for the second successive year, beaten by LARKHALL ATHLETIC – this time 4-0 at Silver Street.
SEASON 2014-15; The FA Cup run began with an August 16 3-1 win here over RADSTOCK with LEE DURHAM (2) and DEAN STAMP the scorers. Two weeks later and goals from JASON KENNARD and player-manager SCOTT ROGERS saw Rovers to a 2-0 win at ODD DOWN. Next up a September 13 2-1 win here at Silver Street over SALTASH UNITED with AIDEN MOYLE and DAVID STEELE the scorers. Next up a 0-0 at BLACKFIELDS & LANGLEY who were then beaten 1-0 thanks to a LUKE ALDEN goal. A fortnight ago we were in action here at Silver Street again beating Isthmian League AVELEY 3-2 with goals by TOM BATH (2) and JAMES BLAKE.

There is no I in team: As Rovers produce a great team performance to defeat Bitton 3-1 with Craig Veal and Dan Western notching their first goals for Rovers.
Jake Wannell started after his bug with Craig Veal and Dean Stamp replacing Russell Jee and Bradley Stamp in the three changes from Wednesday night. The game like most started with the usual probing and prodding of both sides getting the measure of each other seeing who will win the midfield battle.
After twenty minutes the game sprung into life with Dave Gibbins making a strong stop to keep the visitors going ahead. However, 5 minutes later Rovers took the lead when Dean Stamp set up Veal to smash home across the keeper. With a lead to protect the back four with Simon Hill back to his resilient best ably supported by his partner in crime James Clampin snubbed out any threat.
Into the second half and it was Bitton who started with a bang an equalised within a minute of the restart. But Rovers bounced back with man of the match Veal having a shot blocked on the line on 52 minutes and then volleying narrowly over from a Stamp set up 3 minutes later.
But all the good work did not go to waste with Scott Rogers getting to the by line crossing for Stamp to volley home right footed from 20 yards. Western was introduced for Alden on the hour mark. Rovers pushed and pressed but could not get that two goal cushion. On 75 minutes Gibbins again made a good save flying across his goal. But Rovers finished the match strong with Stamp setting up Western who beat the off side trap and drilled the ball past the on rushing keeper.
Rovers: Gibbins; Wannell ©, Hill, Clampin, Hambly; Steele, Rogers, Hopkinson. Alden: Stamp, Veal: Subs: Western for Alden 60, Jee and Wadham not used.
