Willand Rovers v Mousehole AFC

Rovers have been given a chance to go again in the most prestigious cup in England as we have a replay in the FA Cup preliminary round after their hard work to gain a 2-2 draw. We will now host Mousehole this Wednesday in a 7:30 kick-off at Silver Street.

It was a well-earned replay at Trungle Parc as River Allen’s penalties were the difference to have us up in the first 60 minutes but the hosts would pull back in true Cornish style with 2 good worked goals from Mark Goldsworthy and Hayden Turner.

Mousehole could have gone on and won the fixture but Rovers did fantastically despite the uphill battle of having 9 men on the field by the 95th minute and a great set piece just going over the bar which could’ve been the sealer for the Seagulls.

Both Harvey Dorothy and Josh Searle were sent off on the day for dissent and a late challenge respectively and will be available for Wednesday’s game but out for our trip to Falmouth on Saturday.

David Steele spoke to the club’s media afterwards and he expressed his delight with the draw considering the distance and quality which the hosts displayed on the afternoon.

All eyes turn to Wednesday’s fixture on home turf for Rovers where a spot in the first qualifying round is again up for grabs in which the draw for that will be conducted on Monday afternoon. Will it be a magic Willand Wednesday and a shot of progressing further into the competition for David Steele’s men, another 90 minutes and hopefully no more will determine that.

Willand Rovers made the long journey to the farthest west club in England, facing Mousehole in the village of Paul, for their FA Cup Preliminary Round match. The game was a tense and dramatic affair, ending in a 2-2 draw, with both sides set to meet again in a replay.

The early stages of the match saw Mousehole threatening, but Willand’s goalkeeper George Burton was in inspired form, making several crucial saves. One standout moment came when Burton denied a certain goal from close range, reacting quickly to a dangerous ball played into the six-yard box. Willand’s defense, led by Tank, also made key interventions, with Tank notably making a double tackle inside the box to thwart another promising Mousehole attack.

Despite Mousehole’s pressure, it was Willand who took the lead. A quick counter-attack saw Harvey Dorothy brought down in the box after a clever run, earning Willand a penalty and a yellow card for the Mousehole defender. River Allan stepped up and confidently slotted the penalty home, putting Willand 1-0 ahead.

Mousehole responded immediately, but once again Burton was equal to the task, making a fine save from a shot after a dangerous run down the left-hand side. Willand had a chance to double their lead when Nathan Byrne played a clever pass to Camilo, who then set up Dorothy, but the shot went wide.

As the first half drew to a close, the score remained 1-0 in favor of Willand, largely thanks to Burton’s heroics and solid defending.

The second half began with Mousehole pushing hard for an equalizer.

Willand extended the lead through another penalty, as Dorothy was dragged down in the box once more. River Allan stepped up again and coolly dispatched his second penalty of the day, giving Willand a 2-0 advantage.

However, the game took a controversial turn when Harvey Dorothy was sent off, leaving Willand down to 10 men. The numerical disadvantage proved costly, as Mousehole capitalized on a free-kick situation to bundle the ball over the line, making it 2-1.

Mousehole were again pushing for an equaliser and they eventually found it after a deflected through ball fell kindly for their attacker, who made no mistake in slotting it past Burton. Willand’s lead was gone, but the drama was far from over.

In the closing stages, both teams had chances to snatch a winner. Ryan Guppy came close for Willand with a long-range effort that went agonizingly wide, while Mousehole had a shot cleared off the line following a powerful strike. The tension reached its peak when Josh Searlie received a second yellow card, reducing Willand to nine men.

Despite the two red cards, Willand Rovers held firm in the final minutes. Mousehole had a last-gasp chance, but the shot was sliced over the bar. The final whistle blew, and Willand had secured a hard-fought 2-2 draw, earning a replay at home.

The result means that both teams will have another chance to progress to the next round, with Willand Rovers hoping to make the most of their home advantage in the replay.

Match Report: Helston Athletic v Willand Rovers,Tuesday 13th August 2024

 

Willand started the match very brightly and confidently, immediately putting pressure on the home defence with a sustained wave of early attacks. Their efforts were rewarded in the 18th minute when Harvey Dorothy struck a sweet shot from just on the edge of the penalty area to beat the homegoalkeeper at his far post.

The lead didn’t last long however as, in the 25th minute,Willand gave away possession cheaply in midfield and then gave midfielder Steve Colwell time and space to strike a sweet shot from 40m that looped over George Burton into the Willand goal to equalise.

This gave the hosts renewed energy and confidence resulting in the remainder of the half being a much more even affair, with both sides cancelling each other out with no threats on either goal. 1-1 at half time.

The second-half started in with Rovers upping the tempo,having the majority of possession and looking comfortable. On 52 minutes that man Harvey Dorothy latched onto a parried stop by the Helston keeper to squeeze in his second and put Willand deservedly 2-1 in front.

Willand continued to dominate possession until, against the run of play during a quick fire counter-attack down the left,Helston drove a fierce low cross into the box which deflected off the leg of the unlucky Nathan Byrne into the net for an own goal. 2-2.

Rovers continued to dominate and were eventually rewardedon 63 minutes with a penalty when Josh Searle was brought down by a clumsy challenge in the area by a home defender.

Douglas Camilo stepped up to take the penalty and his sweetly struck shot was well saved by the keeper. Josh Baker rushed in and made a good connection with the rebound but the keeper had regained his ground and saved well again: a big let off for the home side.

Rovers piled on the pressure and the home team were notching up the careless challenges and yellow cards. This culminated in Jack Crago, on loan from Plymouth Parkway, receiving a second yellow card and being sent off in the 72ndminute.

This numerical advantage gave the visitors the impetus to push for the winner. Wave after wave of Willand attacks wererepelled by the hosts until, deep into injury time, Willandwere rewarded with another penalty when Josh Baker was tripped in the area. This time Harvey Dorothy stepped up,hoping to score his maiden hat trick for the club and the winning goal, but this was not to be as his shot went wide of the goal and the score remained 2-2.

The final few minutes were mostly played out with the host’s backs well and truly to the wall. However, they managed to hold out until the final whistle to claim an unlikely point. Full time 2-2.

Rovers will be ruing their missed chances, particularly the penalties, but will be heartened by a very good all-round performance that gives Dave Steele something to build on for the FA Cup tie at Mousehole on Saturday.
