Willand progress to FA Trophy next round after a hard fought match against Mangotsfield Utd on Saturday.
The first half started with Willand somewhat on the backfoot, the Mangos looking particularly dangerous on the break down both flanks with their speedy wingers getting to the goal line and whipping in troublesome crosses on several occasions. As the game progressed it became much more of an even affair with Rovers also starting to look more threatening with Mani Skett, Will Richards & Noah Coppin all making life hard for the Mangotsfield defenders.
On 44 minutes a blocked shot from the Mangos was judged to be handball by the referee: the free kick, from the edge of the area was superbly despatched by Cattermole – beyond the hands of Burton and in off the left hand post: 0-1 to the Mangos at half-time.
The hosts started the second half with much more purpose, pinning the visitors in their own half and forcing desperate clearances just to relieve the pressure. On 52 minutes the period of pressure reaped it’s dividend with Coppin finishing well by chipping the ball over the keeper after Will Richards sent a pinpoint ball to him after some good work down the right. 1-1 and Willand looking in charge.
The half continued with Rovers applying pressure, but just not able to get that second goal due to good goalkeeping and some desperate defending. Bailey had a good chance on 70mins but the keeper saved brilliantly at the near post.
80mins and Willand surge through again only for Ben Griffith to pull his shot wide when the empty goal was at his mercy!
82mins and Richards has to go off with what looks a serious ankle injury: problems now for the hosts as they have to see out the last 8 minutes with 10 men as all three subs had already been used!
Although down to 10 men it was Willand that continued to apply the pressure in search of the winning goal. On 92mins Travis Yule whipped a ball in from the right towards the ever busy Coppin: just as Coppin was about to make contact with the cross a lunging challenge from Matt Davis, the Mangos sub, took Coppin, missing the ball completely. Red card for Davis and penalty to Willand.
Archie Reay calmly blasted the ball into the net. 2-1 to Willand.
The final few minutes were played out with Willand still looking dangerous: Glover in the Mangos goal having to make another great save from McCann on 95mins.
Ft 2-1 and we march into the next round!
