Willand Rovers overcome our friends from Tiverton Town to reach the first round proper of the SFL Challenge Cup.
Both teams, due to mounting early-season injuries, started the match with much changed line-ups from their previous weekend FA Cup exploits, with Willand introducing four newbies: returning Archie Reay, striker Stuart Bowker, right-back Alfie Toland and full-back Adam Poole.
Willand started brightly with the pace of their front players and wing backs rampaging through the Tiverton midfield and defence time and time again.
It came as no surprise when the hosts took the lead from a Mani Skett corner on 6 minutes, Ryan Guppy with a deft flick to beat Weeks in the Tivvy goal.
The Willand attack continued to threaten and on 22 mins Will Richards struck a fierce shot from 20 yards into the bottom corner after yet another rampaging surge forward. 2-0 to Willand.
On 35 mins Mani Skett again raced forward down the left from deep in his own half, beating four players before driving a shot goalward. After several good blocks from the Tivvy defenders the ball fell to Alfie Moulden who’s shot loops over the keeper into the net. 3-0.
Tivvy’s backs were well and truly against the wall at this stage as Willand continued to apply the pressure. On 45 minutes this pressure again paid dividends as Alfie Moulden cut in from the right for his second; after a mazy run he blasted an unstoppable drive into the left corner of the goal. Willand 4-0 up at half-time.
Tivvy started the second half showing a little more composure and started to create a few chances themselves. on 64 mins a surging run into the Willand box resulted in a defender pushing the Tivvy attacker to the floor; penalty to Tivvy. Andrew Watkins stepped up converting it, despite George Burton getting a good strong hand on it, the power of the shot was just too much. 4-1.
The game ebbed and flowed after this but on 85 minutes Stuart Bowker capped a fine performance by picking up a slide-rule through ball from the lively Noah Coppin to beat Weeks in the Tivvy goal in a one-on-one with a cheeky shot through the keeper’s legs. 5-1.
