Willand Rovers v Exmouth Town
This was the first time Willand & Exmouth had met in the Southern division as Exmouth were Promoted from the Western League at the end of the 21/22 season.
Exmouth have managed to win all three of their games so far this season and were sitting on top of the table.
Could Willand stop them from making it four?
Right from the off Willand were pressing, within 3 minutes we had a corner, Douglas Camilo whipped it into the box it fell for Will Richards who shot over the bar. Willand continued to press and play the ball around nicely.
Moments later Douglas Camilo had another shot which also blazed over the bar. Willand had another two corners and a free kick all in quick succession, but did not manage to make anything from them.
With 14th Minutes on the clock Rovers were awarded a free kick deep into Exmouth Town’s half. This time it was whipped into the box, a couple of headers then it fell for Douglas Camilo who shot on the half volley straight into the right hand side of the goal Exmouth Towns keeper Robert Powell had no chance. 1-0 to Rovers.
On 25 minutes Exmouth finally had their first shot: a pacy attack and cross from the right ended with a shot flying just wide of the Willand goal, after loud appeals by Town players for a handball in the penalty area during the move were waved away by the referee, Jack Bromham.
As the half progressed Rovers continued to play the ball around crisply & neatly and appeared in complete control of the match. Exmouth did win a kick in a threatening position on the right wing in the 30th minute, but the cross was poorly delivered and the ball went out harmlessly for a goal kick.
As the first half drew to a conclusion there were only two pieces of play worthy of note: on 40 minutes a Douglas Camilo cross into the box was headed just wide by Dean stamp and on 43 minutes another Exmouth free kick from just outside the right side of the Rovers penalty area was blasted high over the home goal by Levi Landricombe.
The second half was much of the same as the first half, Exmouth Town never looked like getting into the match. Willand played the ball around nicely but never really troubled Exmouth Town’s Robert Powell.
Exmouth Town had their only real chance of the second half on the 77th minute when they had a free kick on the edge of the box which was taken well and was on target, however George Burton was more than a match for the shot and saved it comfortably
Ryan Guppy was shown a straight red card on 85 minutes after a clumsy tackle on Landricombe who was racing in on goal after collecting a high ball over the Rovers defense: Guppy being deemed to be the last defender and stopping a goal scoring opportunity.
After the sending off Willand just kept playing the ball around until the referee finally blew for full time.
