Match Report
Rovers take all three points with an excellent 0-1 victory at Cirencester Town.
An even first half saw both teams cancelling each other out in midfield with few clear cut chance created at either end. As the half went on Ciren appeared to get more and more frustrated as the Willand defence stiffled the hosts attackers restricting them to long range efforts that were easily fielded by George Burton in the visitor’s goal. Ht 0-0.
The second half started in the same manner, very even. On 50 minutes Rovers won a corner on the right: this was taken by Jack Rice; he picked out an unmarked Adam Poole who bundled the ball over the line from 3 yards. 0-1, and Willand in front.
The goal spurred the Centurions into action as they applied more pressure in an attempt to get back on level terms. The Willand defence continued to hold strong thanks to some wayward finishing by the hosts and some fine saves by Burton.
On 65minutes a Willand break saw Ben Griffiths fouled on the edge of the Cirencester penalty area: the resulting free kick was taken by Rice and well saved by Harris in the hosts goal.
As the half concluded the hosts ran out of ideas and steam and Willand comfortably held on to claim all three points and dent the aspirations of the Centurions to win the League title and gain promotion.
A fine victory for Rovers. Onward to next Saturday when we host another title contender, Frome Town.
