So how do Rovers traditonaly do on the opening game of the season - we have had a look back at the record books and this is our finding - it seems that opening day games are of mixed success for Rovers.

ROVERS IN THE OPENING GAMES:

So how do Rovers do in the opening games of each season:

Our FIRST EVER, first of the season, Western League game was back in the 2001/02 season as a Western League Division One side when we faced a trip to ILFRACOMBE that we won 4-1. Our first home game that season was an August 25th meting here with HALLEN that we lost 0-1.

Season 2002/03 saw us begin with an August 17th trip to WESTBURY that we lost 1-0, out first home game that season did not come until the fourth League outing, a September 17th game here with TORRINGTON and again we lost that one 3-5!

In the 2003/04 season we began with an August 16th game here against BRISTOL MANOR FARM that we lost 2-0.

In the 2004/05 season the campaign was launched on August 14th with a derby at home to WELLINGTON one we won, beating the Somerset visitors 2-0.

In the 2005/06 season we began life as a Western League Premier side and out first ever top flight game was an August 13th one here at Silver Street against BIDEFORD who we beat 2-1.in front of a crowd of 186.

The 2006/07 season also began here at Silver Street and a crowd of 135 turned up to see us beat CHARD TOWN 2-0.

In 2007/08 we began with a home game here and our biggest opening day win to date with an August 11th 5-1 success over HALLEN. A Danny Baily brace and further strikes from Phil Everett, James Ansell and Danny Burwood, saw to the scoring of the nap hand.

In 2008/09 we again had a home game for starters and once again it was HALLEN who provided the opposition. It was a lively opening day game as we had TWO players sent off. Paul Pocock for two yellows and keeper Brian Cann was sent off after the final whistle!  We even had Manager Clive Jones given the very first red card of his football life! We trailed 1-0 until a second half goal made by new signing Alexis Piper and finished in style by the new (appointed last week), Rovers assistant boss, Gary McCauley.

Last season (2009/10) we began with that opening day defeat up at STREET and of course, just four days later were the beaten here at Silver Street in our opening home League game, 1-0 by ILFRACOMBE.
