Rovers in Reserve

All the latest match reports

The Rovers Reserves are sponsored by THE MANOR HOTEL, CULLOMPTON, the place guaranteed to give you an enjoyable time - whatever the occasion.

ROVERS Reserves won their Silver Street meeting with Clyst Valley by the odd goal in three. The game though, will be long remembered for one of the most bizarre decisions never seen on the Silver Street pitch, and indeed on any other pitch come to that! Paul Pocock had fired the ball into the Clyst Rovers net but protested to the match official that prior to battling his way into the box he had been fouled (he had as well!). So the match official ‘disallows’ the ‘goal’ – he had previously signalled a goal, and awards a penalty – Pocock steps up and slams the spot kick home and Rovers still take a 1-0 lead. When asked after the game by an inquisitive member of the Rovers Management, the match official suggested that he had disallowed the goal and awarded a penalty as the score had insisted he should have had a penalty – and so he awarded one! (Yes, if you are still trying to fathom that one out, so if the person who wrote this!!!). Back to the game and, after the visitors had levelled a superb strike from Lloyd Beech settled it to leave Rovers victorious by the odd goal, in three. Once again Dean Stamp had an exceptional game playing in am deeper than usual position in the middle third.

ROVERS Reserves put on a four star show as they defeated Heavitree Harriers 4-1 in a Devon and Exeter League Premier Division game. Dean Stamp and Danny Baily were paired together in a Western League standard strike force and the pair were key men throughout. It was not though a two man show for the whole side, with James Budden between the posts, put in fine shifts. James Ansell set up Baily for the opening goal before a combination of Stamp and Liam Raybauld provided Ansell with the chance to net. Ansell then doubled his tally after a meat interchange between Baily and Stamp. The fourth goals was a well worked move. Started by Paul Andrews, then Lloyd Beech and Baily were involved, before Stamp applied a polished finish. The Exeter side struck a late equaliser

ROVERS 5:0 Exmouth Amateurs

ROVERS Reserves dealt a nap hand to visiting Exmouth Amateurs to claim three more deserved Devon and Exeter League Premier Division points. Once again it was the predatory skills of striker Dean Stamp that proved the difference between the sides, although Stamp did get some very credible assistance in all three of his first half goals from George Rogers. The youngster was left behind when the 1st team travelled to Wiltshire so that he could get a full 90 minutes under his belt and what an impression he made! In the 25th minute a delightful Rogers ball found Stamp who took it on and waltzed round the visiting keeper before tucking the ball away. Ten minutes later an a Rogers corner was met, on the full, by a climbing Stamp who planted a firm header past the keeper and two became three, both for Stamp and Rovers, three minutes before the break when another sweet delivery from Rogers was finished off by the master marksman with a left foot shot. In the second half Brett Andrews played a superb pass into the run of young Rogers who smashed the ball home and the scoring was completed by Lloyd Beech who slotted a late penalty, awarded after a deliberate hand-ball which left the visitors reduced to ten men. It was ten versus ten for the final ten minutes as Rovers, having used all three substitutes, were forced to sub a sub owing to injury! STAR MAN: Dean Stamp for firing his fourth hat-trick of the season

STAR MAN: Dean Stamp for firing his fourth hat-trick of the season

HATHERLEIGH 2:2 ROVERS

DEAN STAMP bagged another brace to take his Reserve team tally to 16 for the season (to add to the ten he has in the 1st team), but sadly it was not enough to see the Rovers Reserves to victory at Hatherleigh as the hosts scored two second half goals and the game ended 2-2. The Stamp opener was a smart gather, control, and finish, from a neat John Bailey defence splitting pass and his second was a magnificent low level 25-yard free-kick that was round the wall and into the net in a blink of an eye. The in-form hit man did pick up another booking though as he was cautioned for showing his abject misery at being, for the second Saturday in succession, denied what from the side-lines looked a nailed on penalty after being hauled down by the Hatherleigh glovesman. No spot kick was forthcoming, and ‘Stamp’ was booked for his protests!

Saturday March 6th

Newtown (1) 1:3 (3) ROVERS RESERVES

                             Stamp (3)

DEAN STAMP FIRED A FIRST HALF HAT-TRICK as the Rovers Reserves copied the result of the 1st team at Hallen by beating hosts Newtown 3-1. Stamp struck for the first time in the 24th minute, seizing on a poor goal keeping clearance, then shrugging off a challenge before tucking the ball away.  The, after the hosts had almost immediately equalised it was 2-0. In the 30th minute the industrious John Bailey fired in a shot that cannoned back off the upright to Stamp who needed no second invitation to pass the ball beyond the hosts keeper and into the net. A sweet strike fro the edge of the area brought the Exeter side back into the contest with eight minutes of the half remaining but Stamp, lively all game, ran on to the most sublime of long distance passes from Neil Cane before smashing it home – a finish of real class, to rack up yet another treble and take Rovers into the break 3-1 ahead.

There was to be no further goal scoring in the second half, the only notable action being a caution picked up by the treble scorer who was clearly frustrated – and bemused like most people watching – as to why he had been denied a clearly blatant spot kick – he spoke out of turn and got a caution for his troubles – but that was not enough to dent a masterful striking performance from the hit-man and the Rovers Reserves continue to impress in this, their first season in the top flight of the Devon and Exeter League.

Saturday January 30

Alphington 2-3 ROVERS RESERVES

A brace from Dean Stamp and a goal from the game's star man, wing back Kharl Kirby, sealed a 3-2 win for Rovers at Alphington in their latest top flight game - the side bouncing back in style after their midweek East Devon Senior Cup defeat at home to Exmouth Amateurs.
